Description

1 Alma Terrace in Brodick, Arran, is a symmetrical terrace of eight picturesque cottages built in 1856. These single-storey and attic cottages are constructed from coursed red rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. The buildings feature a base course and originally had boarded doors, although most have been replaced with modern versions that do not match the original character. The doors and windows have chamfered jambs, and there are consoled slab canopies above the doors and ground floor windows at numbers 1, 2, 7, and 8. The windows are single and bipartite, with two panes in timber sash and case style, and leaded lattice lights in the attics of numbers 1, 2, and 7, while number 8 has modern replacements that are out of character. The eaves are deep and bracketed, with plain bargeboards and corbels at the gables, and exposed trusses are visible at the gables. The cottages also feature tall, single and paired, corniced octagonal ridge stacks.

The front elevation includes a single-storey block at the center, flanked by two slightly advanced gabled entrances, with a window on either side. There are further gabled entrances at the far left and right, each with a window on the outer sides. To the left, there is a single-storey and attic block with an advanced gable to the right, which has a door and window at the ground floor and a window in the attic. A bay is recessed to the left, featuring a window and a gabled dormer that breaks through the eaves, with a door on the left return gable. A similar block mirrors this on the right but includes a gabled porch on the right return. The interior has not been seen.
