Boundary Wall, St Margaret's, 7-9 Eglinton Terrace, Skelmorlie

This is a large, two-storey villa, built in 1907. It is located at 7-9 Eglinton Terrace, Skelmorlie, and takes the form of an L-shaped plan with projecting two-storey bow windows to the front. The villa has a red-tiled, gabled roof and decorative half-timbering on the gables with chimney breasts corbelled out at the gable apexes, deep eaves, plain bargeboards, and a single-storey service wing to the rear. The exterior is white-painted roughcast render with painted sandstone ashlar dressings. The first floor is jettied out, supported by brackets.

The west (principal) elevation features a timber-panelled front door in the centre, a plain architrave, a small bracketed canopy above, and a tripartite window above the door. Two-storey bowed projections are located in the outer bays, each featuring five-light mullioned windows on both floors, with transoms to the ground floor windows.

The north side elevation has a broad gable to the right, with an inglenook with a red-tiled roof projecting to the right, a large conservatory, and a canted bay window at first floor level to the left. A slightly lower section to the left includes a two-leaf timber-boarded back door. The service wing projects to the outer left, topped with a crenellated parapet.

The east (rear) elevation is irregularly fenestrated, with an advanced gable and service wing to the right. A chamfered re-entrant angle incorporates a staircase window on the first floor; a lower section is glazed to form a lobby, and there is a timber-boarded back door.

The south side elevation is irregularly fenestrated, featuring late 20th-century French doors on the ground floor and a canted oriel window at first floor level.

Small-pane glazing is used in timber casements and sash and case windows. The stacks are corniced and tapered, finished with red terracotta cans. The roof is red tiled, and cast-iron rainwater goods are in place.

The interior features a tiled lobby, a glazed inner door with bevelled glass, an entrance hall panelled to dado height with a timber picture rail and window seat. A timber chimneypiece with a green-tiled inset displays an Art Nouveau style scene of horses ploughing. A staircase rises through an archway. The dining room has a timber picture rail, a chimney-piece with a triple-arched over-mantel, decorative brick insets, a brick fender, and built-in timber settles flanking the fireplace. A Mackintosh-style chimney-piece is located in an upstairs bedroom. Plain cornicing and six-panel timber doors with brass handles are found throughout.

The property is enclosed by round-coped, squared red sandstone rubble boundary walls and includes a garden terrace with sandstone steps.
