Description

This building, built in 1897, originally served as a Post Office and is located on Eglinton Street, Beith, and accessed through a pend. It’s a two-storey tenement building with five bays, designed to accommodate offices on the ground floor and flats above. The shopfront is distinguished by pilasters dividing nine bays, a timber fascia, and a dentilled cornice. Centrally located timber panel doors are present on both the left and right sides. The first floor features three bipartites, with the outer bays having a shallow curve and three lights. Central corniced wallhead stacks are topped with an arch dated '1897' that frames a painted Royal coat-of-arms. A moulded eaves cornice runs along the building, and the ground floor is painted while the first floor is constructed of polished ashlar, with rubble to the rear.

The rear elevation comprises two storeys, with a later brick-built lean-to addition; a single-storey wing to the rear left has a slated, monopitched roof. Fenestration is irregular.

The interior includes a common close with a barley-twist cast-iron balustrade and a timber handrail. The walls are finished with a cream tiled dado featuring a brown foliate band. Timber panelled doors lead to a first-floor room highlighted by a decorative cornice. A small, original mahogany chimneypiece is found in a ground-floor room at the front, which has timber v-groove boarded walls. The shopfront incorporates plate glass windows in timber surrounds, while the first floor has timber sash and case plate glass windows. The roof is covered in grey slates, and cast-iron rainwater goods are in place.

The building, as of 2003, is used solely for sorting mail. It is shown on an Ordnance Survey map of 1910.
