Description
The walled garden and dovecot date from the early 19th century, and were likely built around the time of Grangehill, a classical villa originally constructed in 1804. The walled garden originally supplied Grangehill with vegetables, fruit, and flowers. It features lean-to buildings on the west wall, flanking a taller entrance bay with a piend roof. An arched pend is located within this entrance bay, now blocked, with a triangular dovecot above. The structure is built of sandstone rubble with squared dressings and copes, and timber-framed four-pane windows. It has graded grey slates and a weathervane finial. Cast-iron rooflights are also present. The garden was restored and redesigned, likely around 1929, as evidenced by a shield-shaped date stone bearing the initials "WM", and various carved stone fragments inserted into the walls from this date. The garden is now formally laid out and includes a large decorative stone bench, a millstone set into the ground, timber-boarded oak doors with stylised wrought-iron spandrels featuring thistle motifs in an Arts and Crafts style, and a red brick pergola with timber beams in a vaguely Oriental style. The structure is marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1858.
