Description
This is a crowstepped house, largely dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with earlier elements and a mid-19th century reworking. It is a five-bay building, with two storeys and an attic, incorporating a corbelled Jacobean entrance bay featuring a nepus gable and castellated windowheads. The exterior is whitewashed harl with contrasting sandstone ashlar dressings and quoin strips, incorporating base and string courses.
The main, or southeast, elevation features a symmetrical three-bay block to the left, with a prominent, advanced gabled bay at the centre. This central bay has rounded angles at ground level, corbelled to form a square shape on the first floor. It contains a panelled timber door with a two-part fanlight within a moulded doorpiece, which rises into a blind panel. A semicircular pediment tops the doorpiece, surmounted by a relief-carved five-pointed star. A small glazed light is set within the nepus gable. The bay returns with single windows to each floor on the left, and to the ground floor on the right. Flanking bays each have wide-centre tripartite windows at ground level, a single window on the first floor, and a small, timber-pedimented dormer window above. To the right of the centre, slightly set-back lower bays incorporate a full-height castellated bay with a wide-centre tripartite window on each floor, one to the left and one to the right.
The northwest, or rear, elevation exhibits a variety of elements including a single-storey piended wing with a gable and castellated window in bays to the right, and a piended pavilion bay at the outer right. Bays to the left have a two-storey gable and a lean-to link that obscures an earlier circular window. An ancillary building projects from the outer left angle.
The windows are timber sash and case, with 4-, 12-pane and plate glass glazing patterns. The roof is covered in grey slates. The chimney stacks are coped ashlar, with polygonal cans and ashlar-coped skews bearing beak skewputts. Decorative bargeboarding and timber finials adorn the dormers.
The interior retains many original features, including moulded cornices (some renewed), coombed ceilings, six-panelled doors, panelled shutters, picture rails, and marble and timber fire surrounds (some imported). A panelled porch contains a part-glazed, two-leaf screen door, leading to a stair hall with a timber dog-leg staircase, barley-twist balusters, and ball-finialled newels. The staircase leads to a landing with segmental-arched openings and a round-arched niche.
The ancillary building is a two-storey harled former meat store, characterized by glazed and louvered openings, a slate slab shelf, and a stone flag floor.
Boundary walls, gate piers, and gates consist of flat-coped quadrant walls, pyramidally-coped, stop-chamfered, square-section ashlar gate piers, hoopwork gates, and high rubble boundary walls to the rear garden.
