Description
St Peter's Roman Catholic Church, located in St Andrew's Square, Buckie, was designed by Bishop James Kyle and A and W Reid, architects from Elgin, and built between 1850 and 1857. The chancel, altar, and baptistry were later added by architect C T Menart from Glasgow in 1907. This large Gothic church features a west front with twin towers, constructed from red sandstone with contrasting tooled ashlar dressings.
The west front is characterized by a central gable flanked by two-stage squared towers that have set-back buttresses. The upper stage of the towers includes louvred plate traceried windows, angle pinnacles, and tall facetted spires with lucarnes at their bases. The entrance is a central pointed-headed recess with moulded reveals, nook shafts, and a trumeau, featuring paired cusped doorways with plank doors and a blind quatrefoil in the tympanum. Above the entrance, a large four-light geometric traceried window fills the centre of the gable. The church has a five-bay aisled nave, which is illuminated by triple pointed-headed clerestory lights. The slightly lower chancel is lit by similar but longer triple lights on the north and south elevations, with a gable rose window at the east end. The gable ends are adorned with cross finials, and the roofs are covered with slate.
Inside, the church boasts a richly decorated aisled interior with pointed-headed aisle arcades supported by diamond-plan piers. The chancel and reredos feature multicoloured marble inlay, and the pulpit has a carved Gothic wooden backboard and sounding board. The nave has a plain marble dado, and the Stations of the Cross are displayed in carved wooden frames. The interior includes simple wooden pews and a scissor brace roof, along with an ornate war memorial located at the rear of the church.
Adjacent to the church is the presbytery, a two-storey and attic wide two-bay house situated to the northeast. It is constructed from red sandstone with contrasting tooled ashlar dressings. The presbytery features a slightly advanced gable bay with a narrow shouldered lintel above the entrance, which has a panelled door and a tripartite window to the left. The first floor has three narrow windows and a single canted dormer, all with multi-pane glazing. The building has coped ridge and wallhead stacks, topped with a slate roof.
The church and presbytery are enclosed by a high coped rubble wall, with the church fronted by a low coped wall that includes spearhead railings and matching carriage gates. These gates are flanked by square gatepiers with simple caps and a plain overthrow.
