Description
The Gate-Lodge at Rosebery House dates from the earlier 18th century and was remodelled in the early 20th century. It is a single-storey, single-bay, square-plan Renaissance lodge constructed of random rubble with polished sandstone dressings. The building features a base course, an eaves cornice, and long and short Gibbsian quoins.
The southwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, is symmetrical with an architraved doorway at the centre that has a timber door, and a window centred above it. The southeast elevation is also symmetrical, featuring a central tripartite window with Ionic pilasters that support a corniced hoodmould set in a slight recess, framed by a Gibbsian surround. The northeast elevation is blank, while the northwest elevation has a single window at the centre, which includes decorative ironwork grill and is surmounted by a tooled panel bearing a cartouche flanked by scrolls.
The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design with lead ridges and a decorative ironwork finial. There is a shouldered, corniced wallhead stack on the northeast side.
Inside, the lodge features squared and snecked polished sandstone ashlar, a base course, a fine sandstone fireplace on the northeast wall, and a boarded timber ceiling.
