Description
This early 19th century cottage is rectangular in plan, originally comprising four bays, with subsequent additions and alterations. It is built of tooled, snecked sandstone rubble with broached dressings. Projecting cills and long and short quoins are visible. The north-west elevation, which is the entrance front, is asymmetrical, featuring a boarded timber door to the penultimate bay on the right, flanked to the left by small vertical windows. A window is present in the penultimate bay to the left, and bipartite windows are in the outer bays. Harled additions with central four-pane windows and piended slate roofs extend the cottage to the left and right. The south-west and north-east elevations are largely obscured by these harled additions. The south-east elevation was not visible in 1998. The windows are predominantly six-pane timber sash and case. The roof is red pantiled, with a slate easing course and a terracotta ridge. Harled coped gablehead stacks are topped with circular cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods are fitted. The interior was not inspected in 1998. The cottage forms a group with Carrington Village, numbers 2, 3, and 4 Carrington Mains Cottages, Carrington Mains Steading, and Carrington Mains Farmhouse—these are individually listed. Carrington Village was constructed to serve Carrington Mains, which is part of the Rosebery Estate. Historical maps from 1852 and 1892, a reference in The Statistical Account of Scotland (1792), J Thomas’s Midlothian: An Illustrated Architectural Guide (1995), and NMRS photographs provide further details.
