Description

This is an early 19th century cottage with a rear wing, originally built as part of the Rosebery Estate to serve Carrington Mains. It is a single storey and six bays wide, with a rectangular plan. The exterior is constructed of tooled, snecked sandstone rubble with contrasting, broached dressings. Projecting cills are present, along with long and short quoins. The north (entrance) elevation is asymmetrical, featuring two eight-pane windows in the central two bays, a boarded timber door to the penultimate bay on the left, and a bipartite window to the penultimate bay on the right, which is flanked to the left by an infilled doorway and to the outer left. There is also a bipartite window and a boarded timber door to the outer right. The west elevation is largely obscured by an adjoining building. The south elevation was not visible in 1998. The east elevation is again asymmetrical, with a window positioned off-centre to the left of a gabled bay. A single storey, two-bay wing extends to the outer left, possessing a window to the centre, flanked to the left by a small two-pane window. The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case. The roof is red pantiled, incorporating a slate easing course and a terracotta ridge. Stone skews are present, alongside a coped sandstone gablehead stack, a harled, coped modern ridge stack with a circular can, cast-iron rainwater goods, and a stone skew. The interior was not inspected in 1998. This building is part of a group with Carrington Village, Nos. 1, 3, and 4 Carrington Mains Cottages, Carrington Mains Steading, and Carrington Mains Farmhouse, each of which is listed separately.
