Description

The boundary walls, railings, and gatepiers of the Ardgowan Club, located in Ardgowan Square, were built in 1926. This single-storey, eight-bay building features a largely symmetrical design in the Arts and Crafts style, serving as a bowling and tennis pavilion. It includes a verandah and distinctive hexagonal corner bays, with a concrete render and raised cills. The deep overhanging eaves showcase exposed rafters, and there are some tri- and bipartite window openings.

On the southeast (front) elevation, there is a raised, canted corniced central bay that extends above the wallhead, featuring a tripartite window opening and a small clock above it. This central bay is flanked by three-bay segmental-arched verandahs, with bays separated by timber columns. To the right, there are off-centre, part-glazed timber double doors with a four-light fanlight above. The advanced hexagonal corner bays have bell-cast roofs topped with finials, and there is some decorative timber balustrading to the right.

The southwest elevation is asymmetrical with five bays. Steps lead to an off-centre segmental-arched porch that has a recessed part-glazed timber entrance door.

All windows have been replaced, with some featuring six-pane over plate glass sash and case windows, while others are non-traditional. The piended roof is covered with grey slates and red ridge tiles, and there are corniced ridge stacks with red cans.

The boundary walls, railings, and gatepiers surround the property on the north, south, east, and west sides. They consist of a low coped boundary wall topped with decorative iron railings, which are canted at each corner. There are pairs of square-plan, capped gatepiers at each corner.

The interior, as seen in 2012, retains much of its original room layout, including a large main room with a raised segmental-arched central section and some simple decorative cornicing.
