Description

18-30 Queensgate in Inverness is a building designed by Ross & Macbeth in 1885, showcasing a Free Italianate style. It stands three storeys tall with an attic and features a nine-bay front facing Queensgate, where the central and end bays are pilastered. The ground floor has Ruskinian Gothic arcaded shopfronts, with columns that support consoles carrying wrought-iron balconies on the first floor. The end windows on the first floor are corbelled out from the wall, forming canted bays with balustraded parapets, while the second and eighth windows have segmental pediments. On the second floor, the windows are architraved, and the first and ninth windows are tripartite. The corners are canted and pilastered, with balustered balconies corbelled out from the wall below the first floor windows.

The building also has a front facing Church Street, which features arched ground floor windows and consoled balconies at the first floor windows. The front to Post Office Lane has a simply arcaded ground floor, and the north-east front also includes arcaded ground floor windows. The roof is a slated mansard style with pedimented dormers.
