Manse, Canisbay

The Manse at Canisbay is a house from the mid to late 18th century, with some alterations and additions made in the early 19th century. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure built of harled rubble, featuring chamfered edges and contrasting painted margins. The southwest front has a central door adorned with a moulded doorpiece, while the first-floor windows are located in the northwest and southeast gables, all of which are narrow and face a central courtyard. The southeast wing, likely added in the early 19th century, is a two-storey, two-bay extension. The northwest wing houses offices, including a stable. The building has end and ridge stacks and is topped with slate roofs. The interior has little of interest, with some alterations made to the stairwell, which features a later 19th-century staircase.

The steading is a late 18th-century L-plan single-storey range that includes a bothy, hen-house, and a threshing/winnowing barn. It is constructed entirely of rubble, with the barn positioned at right angles to the bothy. The barn has long elevations and central winnowing doors facing north and south, and its east gable is bowed, possibly indicating it once incorporated a kiln. The interior is paved and skirted with Caithness slabs. There is a small lean-to pigsty attached to the south gable, and a small triangular hen-house connects the bothy and barn at an angle, featuring ten boxes within the thickness of the bothy wall, along with ridge stacks and slate roofs.

Surrounding the property are coped rubble garden walls, with a south-facing section that includes three semi-circular bee boles. There is also a pair of rubble gate piers topped with ball finials.
