Description
John O'Groats Mill is a large, south-facing, three-storey L-plan mill built in 1750, with later modifications in 1845, 1860, and part conversion in 1901, alongside a new build in the same year. The mill is constructed of rubble with tooled rubble dressings. The east wing features a three-storey kiln from 1901, which occupies the outer two bays and includes an entrance at the base, two large cast-iron stays, two wallhead vents, and two tall square ridge vents. The mill entrance is located to the right in the south elevation of the re-entrant, with a first-floor loft door above and a projecting chute gable that breaks the wallhead above. A lean-to wheel-house is attached to the west elevation, concealing an overshot wheel that is powered by a lade supported on rubble piers. The roof is made of Caithness slate.
Flanking the west side of the lade, which serves both mills, is a smaller two-storey, two-bay rubble mill that directs water to a wheel on the north gable. Additionally, there is an irregular single and two-storey rubble range that includes a workshop/stable built in 1845 and a meal girna from 1896, both with Caithness slate roofs.
The bridge, built in 1651 for Cromwellian soldiers, is a small rubble structure featuring a dressed rubble arch ring and lacks a parapet.
