5 High Street, Lochaline

2 High Street, Lochaline is a two-storey terrace of five houses built around 1899 by the Ardtornish Estate. It features a shuttered 'no fines' mass concrete construction method, which was pioneered and widely used at Ardtornish and Lochaline from 1871 to 1906. The design is attributed to Samuel Barham, the Clerk of Works at Ardtornish.

Each house has a door and a single window on the ground floor, with two windows on the first floor. There are pedestrian pends between houses 2 and 3, and between houses 4 and 5, providing access to rear outbuildings, which are also constructed of mass concrete. The roofline is enhanced by a repeating pattern of broad roll-moulded chimney stacks. The roof is covered with grey slate and features deeply overhanging bracketed eaves. The exterior concrete render, mostly painted white, has incised lines that mimic ashlar masonry blockwork.

The windows are mainly timber sash and case units. House number 1 retains the traditional 12-pane glazing pattern seen in early 20th-century photographs. House number 5 has plate glass in the lower sashes, while house number 3 has had its windows replaced with non-traditional metal units prior to its listing in 1988.

The terrace is fronted by iron railings, gates, and gateposts, dating from around 1899, which enclose small gardens. At the rear, there is a detached run of concrete outbuildings, with retaining walls and integrated steps leading to rear drying greens, extending the length of the terrace.
