Description

The icehouse at the former fishing station in Bettyhill is a multi-phase structure from the early to mid 19th century. It is built into a steep bank to the south and features a gabled range to the north, which includes a largely ruinous two-storey, three-bay dwelling house. There is also a long single-storey boilhouse range extending from the north gable. The walls are made of harled and harl-pointed random rubble, with some ladder pinnings and brick repairs. The icehouse has a turf-covered roof, while the boilhouse has a graded grey slab roof.

The icehouse has an asymmetrical west gable with a centrally located entrance door and a retaining wing wall on the right. Inside, there are flagstone floors and a barrel-vaulted entrance chamber that leads to a barrel-vaulted main space, which contains two ice-loading doors. A modern refrigeration plant was added to the rear of the main space in 2003.

The ruined dwelling house has a surviving left bay on the west (principal) elevation, with a north gable that features a rubble apex stack. The corresponding south end wall is missing its gablehead and has a modern roofless single-storey lean-to.

The boilhouse has an asymmetrical west (principal) elevation with a vertically-boarded door at the center, flanked by windows, although the right window has been infilled. There is a widened door opening to the left with a window to the outer right. The north gable is blank and made of harled red brick, while the east (rear) elevation has brick infill where former openings existed. Inside, there are exposed timber beams, one of which is inscribed with "5th September 1840 Duke and Duchess of Sutherland hear visited."
