Description
The barn at Townlands Farm on High Street in Cromarty dates from around 1694 or 1695. It is a long rectangular structure that was originally a house, featuring a steeply pitched roof, crowsteps at the gable, and original skewputts. The building is constructed from red sandstone rubble.
On the south side, there is a central entrance with a worn armorial tablet above a yellow stone surround that has faint leaf decoration. Opposite this, in the center of the north elevation, is a simple chamfered doorway, along with an additional door located at the north-west corner. Inside, there is an inserted floor with an entrance at the west gable.
The east and west gables each have two paired quatrefoil vents, while the south elevation features five square vents just below the eaves, with the outer bays having paired vents and a central vent above the entrance. The roof is covered with corrugated iron, and there are later additions, including a lean-to cart shed.
