Description

Knockbreck House is a building dating from around 1820, with an earlier core. It is two storeys high over a raised basement and features three bays, with the outer bays having full-height bows. The exterior is constructed of coursed rubble with finely tooled ashlar dressings. The central door is accessed by a flight of steps that oversails the raised basement and is framed by engaged Roman Doric columns and a triglyph cornice, topped with a fanlight and a panelled door. Each bowed bay contains three windows, and giant panelled pilasters flank the bows. The building has a moulded eaves cornice and a blocking course with terminal and centre urns. The tall ground floor windows are complemented by shorter first-floor windows, with a blind on the inner face of the bow. The rear has symmetrical fenestration, including a small inserted first-floor window and a box dormer, with 12-pane glazing throughout. The house has end stacks and a piended platform slate roof.

Inside, there is a curved cantilevered stair located at the centre rear, flanked by a pair of round-headed niches halfway up. The landing features pilastered arches, and the stairwell has a decorative plaster ceiling. The drawing and dining rooms retain original panelled chair rails, doorpieces, and doors, along with decorative plaster cornices.

The property is also marked by gate piers, which consist of a pair of plain square dressed rubble gate piers linked to similar end piers with coped, squared rubble quadrants.
