Description

The Lighthouse on George Street in Cromarty was designed by Alan Stevenson in 1846. It features a two-stage, squat drum shape, which is corbelled to support a cast-iron balustrade and a domed lantern. This structure is set on a wide, single-storey semi-circular base and includes a projecting Graeco-Egyptian portico. The lighthouse is constructed of white painted broached ashlar with ochre margins and dressings on the tower.

Adjacent to the lighthouse is the keeper's house, which is a single-storey, three-bay structure with lower single-bay wings. It has a slightly projecting Graeco-Egyptian doorpiece, with detailed pylon pilasters flanking the three central bays and a low coved parapet above. The design details are also reflected in both pairs of chimney stacks. The keeper's house is similarly made of white painted broached ashlar and features 16-pane sash windows and a flat roof. A coped rubble wall surrounds both the lighthouse and the keeper's house.
