Description
The Clocktower and Archway at Cantray Square Steading, dating from around 1830, is a large two-storey courtyard steading that originally housed carriage houses and stables. It features a principal south-facing front with 15 bays, constructed from coursed rubble with tooled ashlar margins and dressings. The centre and outer bays are slightly advanced, each topped with a crenellated wallhead that extends onto the side elevations.
A tall round-headed archway leads to the inner court, beneath a two-storey octagonal tower that once displayed a clockface, now empty. The front has blocked pointed-headed windows on both storeys of three facets, as well as round-headed windows in the same arrangement. The outer bays contain round-headed carriage entrances, which have been blocked and replaced with multi-pane windows. The doors and windows are symmetrically spaced between the outer bays and the central arched entrance, featuring four-pane glazing.
There are pairs of ridge stacks and single wallhead stacks on the east and west return gables. The front portion has piended slate roofs, adorned with gilded ball finials at the ridge angles. Some alterations have been made to the fenestration on the side and rear elevations, primarily to enlarge and improve the dwellings and to modify the steading. The wallhead has been raised, and the pitch of the roof has been altered and covered with corrugated asbestos.
