5 Tomnahurich Street, Inverness

1 Tomnahurich Street in Inverness is a near-symmetrical, three-storey, twelve-bay gabled tenement built in 1898, with later alterations. It forms the end of a terrace and features shops on the ground floor. The building is constructed from squared and snecked tooled cream sandstone, with ashlar dressings. It has a base course in part and corniced shop fronts. The first and second floor openings have chamfered margins, and the cills are also chamfered.

The northwest (entrance) elevation has glazed shop fronts at the ground level, with some parts featuring dentilled cornices. Timber pilasters with consoled brackets divide the bays. The upper floors consist of five two-bay decorative gable ends that break the eaves, each with single windows in all bays on the first floor. The second floor has single windows aligned in all bays, flanking projecting, corbel-bracketed apex stacks, with a dated stone at the center. There are single windows at both floors in the outer right bay and in the chamfered corner bay to the outer left.

The northeast (side) elevation is two-storey with an attic gable end, featuring bipartite windows centered at both the first and second floors, and an oculus centered in the stepped gablehead. There is a chamfered corner bay to the outer right.

The ground floor has plate glass shop windows, while the upper floors contain some four-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, along with some modern windows. The roofs are covered with grey slate, and there are coped sandstone stacks with circular cans. The interiors were not seen in 1999.
