Description
The Bothy at Keiss Harbour was built around 1830 as a cooperage, linked to the development of the adjoining harbour. It is a single-storey cottage-style building with its gable facing the harbour. The structure features loupin-on stone and an inset (now long-empty) barometer. The entire building, including the end chimney stacks, is constructed from coursed local rubble. The southwest front, which faces the cooperage yard, is designed as a pair of three-bay cottages with central doors, plate glass sash and case windows, and boarded doors. The roof was originally covered with Caithness slates, but a temporary roof has been in place since 1996. The northeast front, which faces the street, has blocked openings except for one window. The Bothy is separated from the nearby 'Braehead' by a yard enclosed by rubble-built walls, which includes a single vehicular opening and a lintelled pedestrian gateway that faces the harbour. The yard features a Caithness-flagged pavement and a stone-causeyed drain.
