Description
Sir J J Burnet (Burnet, Son and Campbell), 1891. French early Renaissance 4-storey and attic tenement with modern shops at ground floor. Curving facade of 24 unequal bays to Sauchiehall Street and St George's Road, semi-circular turret at NW section, 3 return bays to Renfrew Street. Red polished ashlar. Sash and case windows in architraves; alternating canted bays at 1st floor, rising to 2nd in pavilion sections; bipartite and tripartite dormers with sculpted pediments and finials.
S SECTION TO SAUCHIEHALL STREET AND ST GEORGE'S ROAD: symmetrical, 18 bays arranged 2-2-10-2-2; 4 outer and 10 central bays, recessed; broken open pediment in centre with sculpted tympana and lounging cherubim;
central clock at 1st floor level in roundhead niche with Michelangelesque 'Night' and 'Day' figures above; flanking canted bays supported by caryatids, crouching Atlantes in pilaster strips to right and left of windows; frieze with lettering above "CHARING CROSS MANSIONS" and scrolled, open pediment with escutcheon and cherub supporters; simple linking 2-bay outer sections with balcony at 2nd floor; pavilions of central section advanced with independent mansard roofs and brattishing, clasping, narrow conically roofed lower sections advanced above close entries with oculi: balcony at 3rd floor in central bays with recessed, elliptically-headed arcade, recessed wall tiled, 2 and 1-light windows; central polygonal cupola corbelled balcony with brattishing, 2-stage arcaded lantern.
N SECTION TO ST GEORGE'S ROAD AND RENFREW STREET: asymmetrical; tripartite NW corner turret with balcony at 1st floor and frieze above "CHARING + MANSIONS", 3rd floor arcade repeated in 2 bays to either side; corbelled, corniced stack to 1st bay from W in Renfrew Street with blind niche breaking through 2nd floor cornice, canted bay 3rd from W in Renfrew Street repeating main pavilion bays to St George's Road; advanced, independently roofed bay 3rd from N in St George's Road, blind balcony over architraved close entrance.
Slate roofs, steeply-hipped to main structure; panelled, corniced, axial and wallhead stacks.
SINGLE STOREY SECTION TO RENFREW STREET: single storey parapetted section linking Charing Cross Mansions and Albany Mansions,origibpnally intendedas full height section of Charing Cross Mansions. Burnetian-arched loading bay and blocked close entrance.
