Description
The Cooperage and Store at 39-45 Washington Street in Glasgow is a former storehouse and offices designed by Archibald Stodart in 1893. This two-storey, six-bay building features a rectangular plan with a gabled, asymmetrical design that reflects the plain style of 17th century Scottish architecture. The exterior is constructed of squared and snecked yellow sandstone with ashlar margins, and it includes stone mullions and transoms on the windows. Notable architectural details include a base course, a dividing band between the first and second storeys, a continuous cill course on the second storey, and an eaves course.
On the west elevation, the principal façade, there is a double bay office block to the right and a gabled bay to the left. A hoodmoulded semicircular-arched door is located to the left, with a semicircular-arched fanlight above a timber door. To the right, there are five tall rectangular lights. The first floor features a canted oriel window on the left with a piended stone roof and an arrowslit in the gablehead. There are three tall rectangular lights to the right. The six-bay warehouse block to the right has a square-headed goods entrance on the outer left, two broad semicircular-arched windows in the bays to the right, timber mullions and transoms, four tall rectangular lights to the right, and a large four-light window on the outer right, also with timber mullions and a transom. The upper storey has two dormers with mullions and transoms.
The east elevation at the rear is harled with irregular fenestration. The south side elevation features a harled gable end that is partially obscured by an adjacent building, while the north side elevation also has a harled gable end.
The windows are a mix of plate glass and multi-pane timber frame sash and case types. The roof is covered with grey slates and lead flashing, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, the building has a central hallway and a staircase with a timber balustrade. The ground floor has plain offices on the left and right. The left bays feature a modern floating ceiling in the open-plan loft space. The right bays contain plasterwork cornices, dado, and ceiling roses in the apartments, along with a corbelled stone canopy fireplace in the front apartment.
