Description

4 Lorraine Road in Glasgow is a 4-bay symmetrical double-villa designed by David Barclay of H & D Barclay, architects, in 1899. The building features droved ashlar with polished long and short work margins and quoins.

The advanced gabled end bays have 2-storey, 5-light mullioned bow windows topped with semi-conical roofs set into the gable walls. The centrally placed doorways are accessed by steps that oversail the basement, featuring dwarf-arcaded fanlights flanked by small pilastered and pedimented sidelights, and double leaf panelled doors. Above the doors are tripartite windows, with sash windows that have plate glass glazing, and sidelights and fanlights adorned with good leaded coloured glass.

There are continuous moulded band courses over the ground floor, wooden modillion eaves, and barge boarding at the gables. The building has a centrally placed corniced axial stack with octagonal cans, and a skew at the party wall with a scroll skew-putt. The steeply pitched slate roofs have tiled ridges, and there is a pierced painted ashlar balustrade to the steps.

The flanks of the villa are made of stugged ashlar with polished ashlar quoins. An off-centre canted oriel rises from corbels at the ground through two storeys. The rear elevation is also stugged ashlar, featuring mostly bipartite windows, and a canted corniced 6-light oriel on the first floor to the right. There are small projecting lean-to porches on both outer bays.
