Description
Hillhead Baptist Church, built in 1883 by T L Watson, is a two-storey church in the Greek Revival style, featuring an attached single-storey hall and a lower three-storey caretaker's house. The church is constructed of polished ashlar with snecked rubble on the rear and return elevations, and it has casement windows with glazing bars.
The church's main elevation consists of five unequal bays arranged in a 1-3-1 pattern, with the central section projecting forward. This section features three tall entrances with architraves and cornices, each with panelled doors. Above, there is an attached Ionic portico with a pediment and recessed glazing. The building has a graduated plinth, a cornice at the ground floor, and narrow, architraved corniced windows on both the ground and first floors.
On the elevation facing Cranworth Street, the bays are arranged in a 1-5-1 pattern. There is a corniced, architraved entrance at No 30 with two narrow windows above. The central bays feature a coupled first-floor pilastrade, with corniced recessed windows that have pilaster architraves. The first-floor cill course continues from the main elevation, and the building has a plain eaves entablature with a cornice and a parapet.
The hall has an architraved, corniced entrance, along with a pilastered and pedimented tripartite bay. The caretaker's house has a single bay that breaks forward and is pedimented, with sash and case windows featuring pilaster mullions and architraves at the ground floor. The entrance has die walls with cast-iron lamp standards.
Inside the church, there is a columned gallery with a panelled front and pilastered upper walls. The eastern end is apsidal and features a pedimented aedicule framing the organ case. The ceiling is compartmented and coffered, while the hall has an anta pilastered design with a compartmented ceiling and circular roof lights.
