Description
Herbert House, located at 24-28 Herbert Street in Glasgow, was designed by Thomson, Turnbull and Peacock and dates back to 1898. This building is a free-style brick and iron framed print works, featuring red sandstone dressings. It stands four storeys tall, with a basement and an attic.
The ground floor showcases a wide central bay that includes a four-centred arched window with a keystone, which is divided by mullion and transom glazing. Decorative elements include thistle and oak leaf motifs in the spandrels, along with boar's heads. The outer bays feature a service entrance to the south and an office entrance to the north, which has a scrolled timber pediment set in a glazed panelled surround. Above this entrance, there is a triplet of segment-headed windows. Deep fluted consoles flank the outer bays and support a heavily bracketed first-floor balcony with an ironwork balustrade.
The central bay contains six pilastered windows on the first and second floors, with simpler detailing on the third floor. The outer bays also have a two-storey canted bay extending through the first and second floors, topped with a lunette window in the third floor, set within a voussoired and keyblocked arch. The building is capped with a modillioned main cornice, and there is an aedicule gable over the northern bay. The southern bay features a full-height attic storey with two arched windows and three segmentally pedimented central dormers. The roof is finished with slate.
