Description
4-8 Cleveden Road is a semi-detached villa built around 1893, featuring two storeys, an attic, and a basement. The design showcases Jacobean details with a symmetrical facade facing west and entrance facades to the north and south. The exterior is constructed of stugged ashlar with polished margins and dressings, while the basement has a rock-faced finish. The roofline is picturesque, adorned with gabled finials and dormers that break through the eaves.
The west elevation is a symmetrical four-bay arrangement with advanced gabled outer bays, each featuring two-storey canted windows that rise to a solid parapet. The gable contains bipartite roll-moulded windows, while the inner bays have single light windows. A continuous string course runs along the first floor cills.
The north facade includes the entrance to No. 8, which is an irregular three-bay design. The left side has a taller advanced gabled bay with a two-storey canted window and a continuous hood mould over the ground. A hooded bipartite window is set in the gable, flanked by octagonal ogee-capped finials. The entrance features steps that oversail the basement, leading to a depressed arched doorpiece with obelisk finials on either side of a pierced "cartouche" pediment. To the right, there is a balustraded single-storey angled bay with windows that include stained glass. The steps and basement area are enclosed by a balustraded parapet.
The south elevation is also an irregular three-bay design with an advanced gabled bay to the left. At the ground level, a roll-moulded window is set in a panel supported by consoles, leading to a balcony with a pierced parapet above the first-floor window. Steps oversail the basement to No. 4, where there is a central doorpiece with consoles supporting a round-arched hood. The south elevation is simpler in detail compared to the others. All elevations feature a deep parapet, tall Jacobean stacks, axial stacks, and slate roofs.
The interiors of the villa retain some notable features, including rococo marble chimney pieces, panelled ceilings, and French Louis Quinze plasterwork. The gardens are enclosed by low stugged coped ashlar walls, and there are two pairs of tall square coped ashlar gatepiers.
