Description
573 Shields Road in Glasgow is a long terrace block built between 1874 and 1876. It steps down the slope, forming the entire eastern side of Shields Road between Albert Drive and Leslie Street. The terrace features matching end blocks that are three storeys tall with a basement, each having four windows, including splayed outer bays. The central houses are two storeys high with attics and basements, each displaying three windows with architraves. These houses are divided into pairs by banded pilasters, and the doorpieces are paired except at the ends, with banded masonry on the ground floor.
There is a cill-band at the first floor and a modillion cornice at the attic storeys. Six of the houses have a single round-headed attic window beneath pedimented parapets, which are adorned with acroteria and ball-finials. The other six houses feature three dormers, each with a pediment treatment and acroteria. The return flanks maintain the same detailing with end triplets. Additionally, the original cast-iron area railings are present on the flanks and also at Nos 553 and 605 to 609 (odd numbers). The property includes original stone gatepiers.
