Description

3-7 Trongate in Glasgow is a four-storey building with an attic, designed by A B MacDonald between 1891 and 1900, likely based on designs by John Carrick from around 1877 for the City Improvements Trust. This terrace of tenements features a lively roofline and bowed corner bays, reflecting a French architectural influence.

The building is constructed of polished ashlar, with the ground floor featuring modern shopfronts and three altered close entrances to Nos 5, 15, and 20, all adorned with timber architraves and decorative fanlights. The façade has 18 windows, which include a mix of single, bipartite, and tripartite styles, each with architraves. The first and second floors have bracketted cornices, while the corner bays are bowed and feature three single lights topped with French truncated conical roofs. All windows are sash and case with plate glass glazing.

The first floor is distinguished by banded masonry, and banded pilasters mark the party walls. Each floor is topped with a cornice, and there is a deep mutuled bracketted eaves cornice. The building is capped with a balustraded parapet that includes pedimented dormers, some designed in a Venetian window pattern, and a central cartouche dated 1877. The roofs are mansard style, covered with slate and featuring axial stacks.

There are also two-bay return elevations facing Chisholm Street and Saltmarket, which are detailed in a similar manner to the main façade.
