Description

99 Dowanhill Street in Glasgow is a group of terraced houses designed by architect David Barclay between 1898 and 1907. The buildings consist of three ranges, each two storeys high with a basement, constructed from polished red sandstone and featuring a stugged ashlar basement. They are situated on a steeply sloping site and primarily have two-bay elevations.

The entrance features steps that extend over the basement, leading to a doorpiece with recessed pilaster reveals, double leaf panelled doors, and decorative lintel details that include dentils and flat scrolls. Above the door is a glazed fanlight and small sidelights, all topped with a consoled cornice and a simplified strapwork pediment. Most windows are fitted with leaded lights that incorporate coloured art nouveau glass. To the right of the entrance, there is a full-height four-light bow window.

Above the entrance, there is a bipartite window with plate glass glazing, while the upper sashes of the first-floor windows have multi-pane glazing. Notable variations include three-bay houses at Nos 111, 119, 127 Dowanhill Street, and 58 Dowanside Road, which also feature full-height bows flanking their doors. No 111 has a ground-level basement and doorpiece, with a moulded band-course that wraps around the bow windows. The eaves are overhanging and supported by timber brackets, and dormers can be found at Nos 117, 125, 127, and 58, either bowed or gabled. The roofs are slate with tile cresting, and the party walls have plain skews and decorative skew-putts.

The steps leading to the houses are supported by an ashlar retaining wall, which holds cast-iron railings and ashlar piers. There is a low ashlar boundary and retaining wall for the front gardens, featuring square ashlar gatepiers. The flanks of the buildings show variations, such as No 127 with polished red ashlar, and No 91, which has an eight-light bow window with a conical slate roof at ground level. No 118 is a three-bay house with full-height four-light bows flanking bipartite windows, while the steeply pitched mansard slate roofs have bow dormers alongside bipartite dormers. No 60 features stugged broached ashlar with a square oriel window on the first floor, supported by stone corbels.

The rear elevation is made of stugged red ashlar and includes bipartite plate-glass windows. Inside, the main rooms and hall have a panelled dado, and there are square timber columned screens in the halls. All doors are panelled and corniced, and many vestibule and cloakroom doors feature good leaded glass.
