114 Brunswick Street, Glasgow

1883, top storey and nos 87-99 Candleriggs rebuilt by Thomson and Sandilands, architects 1912. Large fruit warehouse occupying full width of block between Brunswick Street and Candleriggs; 5-storey with similar facades; Brunswick Street 3-bay, Candleriggs 5-bay, and with simplified detail, that to Candleriggs rebuilt after fire to original designs by Thomson and Sandilands.

101-110 BRUNSWICK STREET: Renaissance details, polished cream ashlar, modern glazed shopfront to left, pend connecting both sides of warehouse to right, good full-height wrought-iron gates; to pend. Above ground all windows tripartite divided by pilasters, sash and case windows with 6-pane upper sashes, 2-pane lower.

Panel-pilasters flanking 1st window with initialled panels. Giant partly fluted Ionic pilasters flank 2nd and 3rd bays. All windows architraved, pedimented to 2nd (central 2nd swan-necked). D eep mutule cornice over 3rd, attic 4th floor more finely detailed and in different sandstone, probably an addition also by Thomson and Sandilands. Square headed Venetian window motif to outer bays, taller bipartite to centre bay with mutuled pediment and carved tympanum, all windows flanked by

pilasters supporting urns. End skews, tall banded attic stacks, slate roofs. Some good panelled shutters survive.

87-99 CANDLERIGGS: 5-storey 5-bay polished red ashlar, details as above with minor simplifications, eg Ionic pilasters unfluted, 2nd windows lack pediments. Ground floor shopfronts largely unaltered, good wrought-iron gates to pend and close entrances.
