3 Lancaster Terrace, Glasgow

1 Lancaster Terrace in Glasgow is a terrace of three villas built around 1875-1876. The building features a symmetrical design with three bays and is two storeys high, with a basement and attics. The exterior is made of polished ashlar stone, which is channelled at the ground level.

Access to the villas is via steps that extend over the basement, leading to tripartite doorpieces that include glazed sidelights. The entrance is flanked by double-leaf panelled doors and elaborate caryatid-term pilasters. The projecting windows on either side of the entrance enhance the facade, with the terminal bays and No 2 featuring a 5-light canted window. The other windows are square and project slightly. The first-floor windows are plain and are linked by a continuous cill band. All windows are sash with plate glass glazing.

Additional architectural details include a disc frieze above the doorpiece, a band-course at the eaves, and a dentil course with a mutule cornice. The building has corniced axial stacks and slate roofs.

At the front, there is a solid corniced ashlar parapet wall leading to the steps, with low cast-iron railings connecting squat square ashlar piers at the basement. Decorative square ashlar gatepiers with coping and cornice are also present.

The east flank of the building has five bays, with polished ashlar and channelled ground. To the right, there is a 3-light corniced square projecting window at ground level, while the rest are single-window sash windows. At the rear, there is a single-storey and basement addition featuring a pedimented gable to the east and three arched windows linked by continuous hood-moulds with occuli in the spandrels. The rear elevation is made of droved ashlar and includes round-headed dormers.
