Description

The Scottish Amicable Life Assurance Society building, located at 31-39 St Vincent Place in Glasgow, was designed by Campbell Douglas and Sellars and constructed between 1872 and 1873. This three-storey and basement, seven-bay commercial building is designed in the Italian Renaissance style and has been raised by two storeys with a mansard attic. It is built of white sandstone ashlar and features polished granite columns.

The central porch, supported by Corinthian columns, oversails the basement area and leads to a round-arched keystoned doorway. The ground, first, and second floors have arched windows, with attached Corinthian columns or pilasters at the ground level, adorned with sculpted spandrels. The Corinthian pilasters above are complemented by a blind balustrade on the first floor, and a continuous cornice detail links the first floor. Decorative sculpture rosettes are present in the spandrels, and carved panels are located between the windows. The second floor windows are flanked by blind niches, and above them are three two-storey pilasters. The shallow canted windows are accompanied by flanking single lights, while the centre light of the third floor features a segmentally pedimented aedicule with sculpture in the tympanum. The building also has tripartite pedimented dormers at the rear, although modern casement glazing has been installed. The slate mansard roof is topped with decorative wrought-iron railings at the basement, which include gilded details and a polished granite die.

Inside, the building features a Corinthian columned business hall that has been refurbished.
