Description

103-107 Trongate in Glasgow is a five-storey and attic warehouse built between 1899 and 1902 by John McKissack and Son for the City Improvement Trust. It is designed in the Edwardian Free style and features three bays, with an emphasis on the central bay, constructed of polished red ashlar.

The ground floor has modern shopfronts. The central bay projects outward and includes canted bays on the first, second, and third floors, with a basket-arched window on the fourth floor. Single lights are located on either side of the central bay, with round-arched windows on the fourth floor. The windows on the first, second, and third floors are architraved with pedimented hood-moulds, which are alternately triangular or round-arched, while the fourth-floor windows have moulded archivolts. All windows are sash and case, featuring two-pane lower sashes and small-pane upper sashes, although the fourth floor has modern glazing.

Giant order pilasters flank the bays from the first to the fourth floors, and there are moulded cill bands at all floors. A deep mutule cornice runs above the fourth floor. The attic features windows set in a shaped gable with obelisk finials, along with two single windows that retain their original glazing, and a cartouche above them. The building is flanked by brick walls and has tall, corniced end stacks.
