Description
Laurel Bank School, located at 1 Lilybank Terrace in Glasgow, was designed by David Horne between 1881 and 1883. It is a terrace of four three-bay houses that are now linked and stepped down a slope. The building is in the Renaissance style and consists of two storeys, a basement, and an attic. The exterior features polished ashlar stone, with a channelled ground floor and squared rubble on the rear elevation. The first, fourth, ninth, and twelfth bays are canted and have five-light windows, while the third, sixth, seventh, and tenth bays project and feature a balustraded balcony over a two-light window at ground floor level.
Each house has a central doorway at the top of steps that oversails the basement area, leading to a recessed Roman Ionic portico with sidelights. Above the doorway is a single light window. Architectural details include a ground floor level band course, a ground floor cill band, and a cornice. The first floor also has a cill band, and the main cornice features a dentil band. The solid parapet is interrupted by two-light anta mullioned dormers with shaped heads and finials, as well as round-headed, set-back dormers.
On the west return, the main detailing continues for one bay, with three central bays that are glazed and slightly advanced, flanked by blank bays. The south return is similar to the west return. The property is enclosed by coped boundary walls, with piers flanking the entrances and cast-iron railings.
Inside, there are columned hall screens and column screens on the first floor. In the ground floor north room of No. 3, there is a columned niche. Nos. 2 and 3 feature sculpted, arched marble chimneypieces with bay-leaf moulding and scroll keyblocks. Notably, No. 2 includes a billiard room designed by James Thomson in 1889, which has a coved, corniced ceiling that is top-lit with coloured glass and a carved timber chimneypiece.
