Description

The Pentagon Centre, located at 30-46 Washington Street in Glasgow, is a large warehouse building designed by A Gardner in 1897 and H E Clifford in 1907. It is a massive five-storey structure with an attic, featuring 13 main bays and three additional southern bays, along with 12 returning northern bays. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings in a Renaissance style, showcasing a front made of Locharbriggs stone, a rubble plinth, and ashlar elements on the ground floor and for the pilastered frames on the first to third floors, which have rubble recessed faces.

The ground floor has undergone various alterations, particularly to the round-arched entrances. The first and second floor windows are set within margins and feature a cornice that links vertically, while the third floor has a cill band. All these windows are situated under giant pilastered arches, with the central bay being wider and having pilasters that extend into the fourth floor, which includes a tall central canted window. The outer windows of the central bay are detailed similarly to those in the flanking bays. The fourth floor also features key-blocked bull's eye windows. The main cornice and parapet are present but have been mutilated.

An office block occupies the three southern bays and consists of four storeys. It has two wide arched openings that flank a central entrance recess, which is cavetto moulded and has pilastered and corniced doors, along with a balcony above that leads to a three-storey canted window. The office block is topped with a die parapet. The remaining elevations of the building are constructed in brick, with bold arched bays on the northern side.
