Description

1 Sydenham Road in Glasgow is a mid-19th century Italianate villa featuring a conservatory to the south and a projecting single-storey service wing to the east. The building stands two storeys tall and is constructed of polished ashlar, with a painted porch.

The east elevation has three irregular bays, with an advanced central bay that includes rusticated quoins and a recessed entrance bay to the right. There is a single-storey Roman Doric porch with a mutule cornice and a pierced ashlar die parapet. The entrance features an arched pilastered doorpiece with double-leaf panelled doors. Above the door, there is a single moulded arched window with engaged column reveals. The central bay has a boldly projecting three-light canted window at the ground level, supported by pilaster mullions and a mutule cornice, which in turn supports a blind traceried balustrade above a five-light arcaded bow window with engaged column mullions. To the left, at ground level, there is an aproned window with an architrave and a consoled cornice that supports a traceried ashlar balustrade. On the first floor, there is an arched columned bipartite window with plate glass sashes. The angle margins continue into the eaves course with shouldered angles. The building features bracketed eaves and corniced axial and wallhead stacks, with most of the cans being lotus or octagonal in shape. The north flank is finished in polished ashlar, while the south flank has a droved ashlar with simpler details.

A timber and cast-iron framed conservatory projects to the south, connected to the main house by an acid-etched communicating door. The rear elevation is constructed of stugged coursed ashlar and was altered around 1980 to provide access to the top flat via an external flight of steps leading to a low doorway at the first floor, partially re-using an arched stair-light window. The building also includes a projecting single-storey laundry/service wing.
