Description

4 Sydenham Road is a mid-19th century detached villa featuring some Italianate details. It stands two storeys tall with attics, constructed from polished ashlar stone with painted dressings and a base-course.

The east elevation facing Sydenham Road has three irregular bays. The central bay is highlighted by a ramped-pillar porch that leads up to a heavy bracketed balcony with a pierced ashlar parapet. The entrance features a pilastered arched doorpiece with a double-leaf panelled door and a glazed fanlight above. There is a single-light window above the door with a recessed shouldered moulded architrave. To the right, there is a gabled advanced bay that includes a single-storey canted bay window at ground level, supported by pilaster mullions and topped with a modillion cornice and pierced ashlar parapet. Above this bay, there are bipartite arched windows with a banded archivolt. To the left at ground level, a single-light architraved window features paired consoles, a cornice, and a parapet. On the first floor, there is an arched hood-moulded window set in an advanced rectangular panel that rises into a gablet. The villa has sash windows with plate glass glazing and deeply overhanging timber bracketed eaves. The roof features axial stacks with unusual incised decorative cans and is covered with slate.

Attached to the left is a service wing, which has been converted into a dwelling. This two-storey gabled block connects to the main house via a single-storey and attic recessed bay that includes a wide, shouldered arch doorpiece now fitted with a modern door. The roof of the main house includes a long low arcaded top light for the billiard room.

The north elevation is finished with stugged ashlar and has simplified details, including a tall wallhead stack. The west elevation, which faces the garden, features a further simplified conservatory at the rear.

Inside, the villa boasts elaborate plasterwork on the cornices and ceilings of the main rooms. The hall has a panelled dado, and the staircase is adorned with cast-iron balusters and a carved timber newel post.

The front garden is enclosed by a low coped ashlar wall, which includes a pair of tall square ashlar gatepiers with checked-back arrises and arched hood-mouldings that support a coping stone.
