Description

The Malt Barn and Kiln at The Cross in Auchtermuchty is an early 19th century structure associated with Bonthrone Distilleries, believed to have been founded in 1829. The building consists of a single-storey range that connects a house to a square kiln. It is constructed from whin rubble with ashlar dressings around the door and features a small timber-framed window to the left. The roof is slated and includes a roof light.

The kiln has a piended pantiled roof and is made of whin rubble with red sandstone dressings and quoins around the original openings. On the eastern elevation, there is a central door that has been bricked up and converted into a window, with a small drying floor opening located above at the eaves. Flanking the central door are a pair of early 19th century windows with grey droved sandstone lintels and dressings, one of which has been altered into a door in the 20th century. Access to the drying floor on the southern side was originally provided by a forestair, which has since been lost. The interior retains I-beam iron supports and perforated cast-iron tiles from the grain drying floor. An early 19th century opening at the southwest angle has been blocked.

The malt barn, which has been converted into a garage, features two malting floors and a barley loft. It is a symmetrical six-bay barn built on a sloping site, meeting the kiln at a slight angle. The ground malting floor openings on the eastern elevation are undressed and have red sandstone lintels that are droved with narrow margins, all of which have been infilled with concrete. The first and second floor openings, corresponding to the malting floor and barley loft, are aligned above the ground floor openings in alternate bays, featuring red sandstone lintels and some red sandstone dressings. The barley loft includes cast-iron tie-plates, and some boarded timber shutters remain, with two on the eastern side at the northern end and several on the western elevation, while others have been replaced with vertical-set iron bars. There are also larger sandstone dressed openings on the first floor, and a sliding garage door has been added to the northern elevation. Skylights face west and north, but the interior of the barn has not been seen.
