Description

The farmhouse, dating from circa 1780-1800, is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular building, with a further single-storey and attic bay, and a distinctive two-stage, conical-roofed rear tower added in the mid-to-late 19th century. The farmhouse is now part of a largely L-plan steading, which was detached in 2008. The principal, south-facing elevation is symmetrical, with widely spaced bays and a central porch featuring a cornice and stepped blocking course; a window is set on the south side, and a door on the right return. A set-back bay to the right is constructed of brick and has a piended dormer window. The rear, north-facing elevation is notable for the tower breaking the eaves at its centre. Whitewashed rubble and harl construction is complemented by droved and stugged ashlar quoins, an eaves course, raised margins, and cills. The tower itself is of harled red brick with a mutuled cornice.

Ancillary structures include a small, single-storey gabled dairy projecting from the rear elevation of the east wing of the farmhouse, a single-storey piended range immediately to the east of the dairy, and a further four-bay piended wing to the southeast. Both piended ranges have corrugated roofs. Timber sash and case windows, predominantly 12-pane (though boarded up at the time of inspection), are present throughout. The farmhouse has graded slates, ashlar coped skews, coped ashlar gablehead stacks with polygonal cans.

The interior retains a good original room plan with low ceilings, panelled shutters, deep ingoes, and simple cornices in the ground floor principal rooms. Timber doors are 6-panelled and boarded. Entrance is via flagstones, leading to a room that connects to the tower, which features a press lined with boarded timber and timber shelves, and a semicircular timber stair. First-floor bedrooms have simple painted timber fire surrounds; one has a cast iron horseshoe fireplace, the other is boarded up. A room at the rear leads to the tower water closet, which is encased in timber and likely of a valve closet type, with a boarded timber interior and a tiny circular earthenware washhand basin. The kitchen includes a tall boarded timber dado and a flagstone floor, and connects to a flagstoned dairy/larder with slate and timber shelves, and a probable laundry with evidence of a copper boiler base.

Sections of a high rubble boundary wall remain to the south, bordering the former orchard. The steading is a larger complex of agricultural buildings, now reduced to a predominantly L-plan arrangement, including a good cartshed and granary range. The cartshed and granary are of rubble construction with some tooled ashlar margins, with some blocked openings. Four segmental cart openings face the east courtyard elevation, and the west elevation features small eaves openings with sliding boarded timber panels and fixed glazed panes above. Slate roofing is piended to the north. A further range has a wide gabled elevation with blocked openings to the north courtyard, and a south elevation set into sloping ground, with gables and loft openings flanking a circa 1900 gabled projecting wing.
