286-290 High Street, Kirkcaldy

286-290 High Street in Kirkcaldy is a classical tenement building from the earlier to mid 19th century, featuring three storeys and three bays. The ground floor has been altered for a shop, while the building is constructed of polished ashlar and coursed rubble, with an eaves course and architraved surrounds on the first floor.

On the north elevation facing High Street, the ground floor has a modern shop front with a central pier, a recessed door, and display windows on either side. The first floor has a window with a panelled apron in the centre, flanked by wider windows that feature decorative cast-iron window guards or balconettes. There are three windows on the second floor.

The first-floor windows are timber sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern, while the second floor has top-opening timber windows with plate glass glazing. The ground floor features plate glass display windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are broad ashlar gablehead stacks, with the western stack corniced.

Inside, there is a top-lit dog-leg staircase that leads to a spiral staircase on the second floor, featuring decorative cast-iron balusters and a timber handrail. The interior includes decorative plasterwork, with a panelled ceiling and marble fireplaces on the first floor.
