Description
The Arcade Halls, located to the west of the Wemyss Buildings on High Street in Kirkcaldy, were built in 1858 and extended around 1864 to 1872. This three-storey, twelve-bay linen factory features a grouping of bays 5 to 7, with later shops added at the ground floor, situated on sloping ground that descends to the south. The building is constructed from large blocks of orange sandstone rubble on the south side and smaller red rubble on the north side, with ashlar quoins and some dressed stone. There is an eaves lintel course and stone cills throughout.
On the east elevation, which faces the arcade, there are various modern shops at the ground level with a central doorway. The upper floors have regular fenestration, although bay 9 has wider openings, and bays 9 and 12 on the first floor, as well as bay 12 on the second floor, are all blocked. Quoins are present between bays 5 and 6 on each floor, and there is a shouldered wallhead stack above.
The west elevation exhibits regular fenestration, but bays 1 to 7 are blocked. The south elevation features a prominent gablehead stack with fluted consoles and a fielded panel beneath a cavetto cornice, topped with concave-moulded coping.
The building has small-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows, and the roof is covered with graded slates. There are coped and shouldered wallhead stacks on the west side and coped stacks at the gableheads. The skews are ashlar-coped with square skewputts on the south side.
The interior was not seen in 1997.
