Steading, Ashes House

This is a farmhouse dating from the earlier to mid-19th century. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular building with single-storey, single-bay wings flanking the main structure. A modern, mid-20th century two-storey wing was later added to the rear, along with a single-storey extension adjacent to it. The farmhouse is rendered, with a painted ashlar eaves course, quoins, and window and door surrounds. The main (south) elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central door with a fanlight above, flanked by single windows. Three first-floor windows are positioned at eaves level, centrally above. Single windows are present in each of the flanking wings. The west elevation has a plain gable, while the north elevation showcases two ground-floor windows to an advanced central extension. A first-floor window is set back on the north side, alongside a window and door to the left, single-storey wing. The east elevation presents a plain gable, with a window to the later rear extension and a first-floor window to the earlier extension behind. The windows are timber sash and case with four panes, though rear windows have been replaced. A replacement timber door is also present. The roof is pitched and covered in slate, featuring raised stone skews and coped gable end stacks with circular cans. The single-storey wings have piended slate roofs with tall wallhead stacks. Flat roofs are found on the rear extensions, with a northeast corner stack on the two-storey wing. The interior was not inspected in 2001.

Behind the farmhouse is a group of earlier to mid-19th century farm buildings arranged in a U-plan around a central courtyard. These buildings are constructed of whitewashed stone rubble, with exposed stone visible on the north-facing roadside elevation. The west range includes a stable block with a lean-to on the left (south) side, and a chimney. A window is on the left side, a blocked door on the right, and a gabled dormer window above. Further along are a window to the right of the blocked door, a door to the right, and a blocked door far to the right, with a ventilation slit above. The interior of this range is gutted. Modern stable buildings are attached to the rear of this wing. The north range incorporates three segmental cart shed arches on the right, with a loft opening above the central arch. A stone forestair leads to a rightward location, where a first-floor pedimented loft door is situated above. A door provides access to a store to the right of the stairs, with a loft opening above. Three loft openings are located at the rear. The east range consists of a byre on the far left, with a door and window above, and a lower roof line to the right range. A door and window are present on the left byre, while a door is found on the right. A former small bothy is situated on the far right, with a possible blocked window to the right. A door is positioned in the south gable, with a small window above to the left. Gable apex stacks are present on the bothy, and a window on the east elevation. Paved flooring and drainage channels remain in the byres.

A rubble wall extends eastwards from the north range, from which a driveway begins, delineated by two square-plan gatepiers topped with conical coping stones (the western coping stones are replacements). The farm buildings have varied glazing and replacement doors, with a clay pantiled roof, piended on the north range and pitched elsewhere.
