Description

Garthill House is an Arts and Crafts villa dating from around 1898. It is a two-storey building with an attic and basement, constructed on an asymmetric plan. The exterior is rendered with stone cills, ashlar dressings, and crowstepped gables.

The west-facing principal elevation features a three-stage square entrance tower, which rises above the main roofline. The tower has a central window on each floor, with a timber panelled door and moulded architrave on the right return. To the right of the tower is a ground floor window, and above it, a dormer window that breaks the eaves. A single-storey, lean-to corridor links the tower to the main block, with five windows above. A slightly advanced gable is located to the left of the corridor link, and a single-storey service wing projects from the ground floor gable, concealed behind a high coped L-plan wall.

The south elevation has a doorway (formerly a window) and a window, both now behind a modern, glazed and rendered conservatory. The east elevation slopes down to the north on the ground floor. It showcases central French doors with sidelights and a fanlight, leading to a raised patio with decorative iron railing, and quadripartite windows above. An attic dormer window, with slate cheeks, is centrally positioned. A canted inglenook bay sits to the left of the French doors, featuring small windows on the canted sides, with a window above and a small attic window in the nepus gable. The far left elevation has a large window and a breaking eaves dormer window above. A ground floor tripartite window punctuates an advanced gable to the far right, with a first-floor window centred above, and a small first-floor window to the left.

The north elevation is four bays wide, with a single-storey service wing to the left. A timber boarded basement door is on the left, followed by three ground floor windows and a bipartite window to the right. An asymmetric nepus gable is off centre to the left, with two first-floor windows. Two rectangular breaking eaves dormer windows are located to the right, and a lean-to porch is situated on the far right, with a window and a timber boarded door on the return. Further to the right are a scullery, washhouse, and stores.

The windows are predominantly 15-, 12- and 9-pane timber sash and case. The roof is pitched, with a dormer roof on the tower, covered in grey slates, with crowstepped skews, beaked skewputts, coped ashlar, rendered gablehead and nepus gable stacks and circular clay cans.

The interior features include a double-height hall and billiard room with an adjacent inglenook, a former drawing room with a pilastered archway and original doors and door furniture.

The boundary walls are constructed of random rubble with ashlar copes along Ferryhill Road, and incorporate a timber boarded door to the left of square-plan ashlar gatepiers, with a lintel inscribed ‘GARTHHILL’. A random rubble wall extends to the east, with a dressed rubble archway leading to the lower garden.
