Description
East Wing of Carlingnose Farmhouse, located at 4 Ferryhills Road in North Queensferry, dates from the late 18th century, with additions from the 19th century. This two-storey farmhouse features a rectangular plan, with a 1.5-storey section to the west and a single-storey flat-roofed wing with a rooftop balcony to the east. To the northeast, there are three bays of stables that have been converted into garages. The exterior is made of painted rubble, with painted stone cills, and droved painted ashlar rybats and quoins.
On the north elevation, there is a wide lean-to rubble porch located off-centre to the right, with a small window and door to the right return. A window is positioned to the left of the porch, and another small window is to the right. The first floor has a central window. The 1.5-storey section to the west features a door with a pitched timber porch on the far left and four unevenly spaced ground floor windows to the right of the door, with a blocked door between two of the windows on the left. There are three evenly spaced first floor windows near the eaves. The single-storey, two-bay section to the east has a door on the left and a window on the right, with a modern rooftop balcony featuring cast-iron railings above. The piended three-bay garage range adjoins to the northeast.
The west elevation consists of a plain garage wall that forms the boundary to Ferryhills Road. The south elevation, which is the principal front, has a central modern conservatory flanked by windows. Above, there are three first floor windows centered above the ground floor openings. The 1.5-storey section to the west has an off-centre right window and three raised roof lights. The single-storey, two-bay section to the east features a central door and an external cast-iron spiral staircase to the right leading up to the first floor balcony. The east elevation has a plain wallhead.
The windows are predominantly modern non-traditional timber with four panes, while the ground floor of the 1.5-storey section to the west has eight-pane timber windows. The roofs are pitched and covered with grey slates, featuring ashlar coped raised skews and painted coped ashlar gablehead stacks, with the west stack being truncated.
Inside, the kitchen retains its original flagstone floor.
