Description
The Society Nightclub, formerly known as Philp School, is a single-storey and basement classical building dating from 1850, located at 13 Charlotte Street in Kirkcaldy. The structure features a flat roof and is constructed from stone-cleaned ashlar, with some areas channelled. Notable architectural details include a high basement, a cill course, a cornice, a blocking course, and cavetto coping. The façade is enhanced by paired pilasters and Doric columns set on square plinths, along with bracketed windows.
On the south elevation, there are steps leading up to a three-bay portico, which is flanked by columns on either side of a pedimented central bay. The central door is surrounded by windows in the flanking bays, separated by pilasters. To the left, there are two windows with paired pilasters beyond, mirrored on the right side, which also features an additional window and door in an extension at the outer right.
The west elevation facing Charlotte Street consists of four bays. Steps lead up to a door at the outer left, with three windows to the right and paired pilasters at the outer corners. The windows have a small-pane glazing pattern and are fixed timber, with modern canopies above. Decorative cast-iron downpipes with rainwater hoppers are also present.
The interior was not seen in 1996. Surrounding the property are boundary walls made of saddleback-coped ashlar, along with square pyramidal-capped gatepiers. The gatepier on the left bears a plaque commemorating the school, stating "Kirkcaldy Philp School 1850-90" and honoring its donor, "Bailie Robert Philp 1751-1828."
