Description
178-180 High Street in Burntisland is a three-storey, five-bay tenement building dating from the late 19th century, featuring shops on the ground floor and forming part of an irregular terrace. The building is constructed of dressed ashlar, which has been painted at the ground level. It includes a partial cornice above, raised margins, quoin strips, and chamfered arrises, along with a base course and bracketed cills.
On the north elevation facing High Street, there is a shop located at the outer right, which has a cornice, with a door and display window to the left. To the right of the centre, there is a door with a plate glass fanlight situated under a band course. The centre features a corniced shop door and display window, while the left of centre has another corniced display window and shop door. There is a segmental-arched pend entrance at the outer left, also under a band course, with stone setts extending the full length of the pend. All shop doors are two-leaf, timber, and panelled.
The first and second floors exhibit regular fenestration. At the rear of No 172, there is a harled, circular stair tower. The three left windows on the first floor have a 12-pane glazing pattern in sash and case windows, while the modern windows above also follow a 12-pane pattern. The four right windows feature plate glass glazing in sash and case windows, and the ground floor has plate glass glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates and features ashlar coped skews, along with broad, coped ashlar stacks that include some chimney cans.
