Description

Elgin Railway Bridge in Charlestown was constructed around 1795. It features coursed sandstone rubble with roughly droved ashlar dressings and soffits. The bridge has three segmental arches, with metal tie plates over the central and southern end arches. There is a sloping buttress on the southern end, on the west side. The parapet is made of sandstone rubble with rough rubble coping. The road surface is cobbled. To the west, there is a steep drop, while the slope to the east is gentler. This bridge was built to carry the former Elgin Railway.
