Description
The Whyte-Melville Memorial Fountain, located on Market Street in St Andrews, is a public fountain designed by architect Robert W. Edis and sculpted by Thomas Earp, with medallions created by J. E. Boehm in 1880. This memorial honors Major George Whyte Melville, a soldier and novelist who lived from 1821 to 1878. The fountain is constructed from red Dumfriesshire ashlar and Dalbeattie granite. It features a circular basin with two tiered quatrefoil basins of diminishing scale, which are supported by squat columns adorned with foliated capitals. The middle basin includes medallions and an inscription.
