Description
This is a bronze memorial plaque, erected in 1922 by the Trustees of Robert Mackay Smith, a merchant in Leith. It commemorates Sidney Herbert, 1st Lord Herbert of Lea (1810-1861), who served as Secretary of State for War and took steps to fortify the island of Inchkeith. The plaque displays the arms of the Sidney family. The memorial acknowledges the long-standing advocacy of Leith merchants for the defense of Leith port, a cause that Sidney Herbert championed. References are found in N MacDonald’s Islands of the Forth, published in 1985.
